Bending Formulas & Guidelines

Tonnage Formula

P = (1.42 × L × T² × σ) / V
  • P = Required tonnage
  • L = Bending length (mm)
  • T = Material thickness (mm)
  • σ = Tensile strength coefficient
  • V = V-die opening (mm)

Bend Allowance Formula

BA = (π / 180) × A × (R + K × T)
  • BA = Bend allowance
  • A = Bend angle (degrees)
  • R = Inside radius (mm)
  • K = K-factor
  • T = Material thickness (mm)

V-Die Selection Rule

V = 8 × T (for mild steel)
V = 10 × T (for stainless/aluminum)

The V-die opening should be 8-12 times the material thickness depending on material type and desired bend radius.

Minimum Flange

Min Flange = V / 2 + R + T

Minimum flange length ensures the material doesn't slip into the V-die during bending. Add safety margin for complex bends.
